With much of the structural elements in place, work proceeds on developing aesthetic features that will bring the architecture toward the vision of Mickalene Thomas.

The site, now transformed almost entirely, embodies an idiosyncratic and otherworldly atmosphere. Immersed completely, one’s spatial experience is formed according to the complex narratives, cultural perspectives and biographical clues that are unique to Thomas’ exploration. An exciting time in the development of the project, the logic of the space unfolds, and we begin to realize the true scale of this Gesamtkunstwerk.

After months of preparation, co-ordination and planning, Better Days is finally becoming a reality! We are constantly amazed as the space exceeds all our expectations, with exciting developments taking place every day. The project has been made all the more enjoyable by our strong construction team, whose dedication has seen them working well into the early hours, each day! Despite the mammoth workloads and unending task lists we are driven by this unique vision of what is sure to be a key, not-to-be-missed, feature of Art Basel 2013.

Construction Begins!

The Better Days, Basel, journey begins as construction of the installation gets underway. Over the coming weeks a team of artists, designers, musicians and hangers on will bring the Galerie at the Volkshaus to life with a program of exhibitions, performances, screenings and parties; curated and produced by Mickalene Thomas.
